Deck Washing Checklist: Are You Ready?

A clean, well-maintained deck makes your outdoor space safer and more inviting. Before you grab the hose or call in the pros, use this handy checklist to ensure a smooth, effective deck wash.

1. Inspect & Prep

  • Clear the Deck: Remove furniture, potted plants, grills, and décor.

  • Sweep & Scrape: Brush away leaves, dirt, and loose debris; scrape off peeling paint or flaking stain.

  • Check for Damage: Look for loose boards, protruding nails, and rotting wood—schedule repairs before washing.

2. Protect Surroundings

  • Cover Nearby Plants: Shield shrubs and flowers with plastic sheeting or drop cloths.

  • Seal Electrical Fixtures: Wrap outlets, lights, and speakers in waterproof covers.

  • Guard Adjacent Surfaces: Tape off siding, stone, or brick to avoid overspray discoloration.

3. Gather the Right Tools & Supplies

  • Soft-Wash System or Low-Pressure Washer: To clean without blasting wood fibers.

  • Deck-Safe Cleaner: Choose a biodegradable, wood-friendly detergent (oxygen bleach–based for mold/incline).

  • Stiff-Bristled Brush or Rotary Deck Brush: For gentle agitation in stained or moldy areas.

  • Garden Hose with Spray Nozzle: For thorough rinsing.

  • Safety Gear: Gloves, eye protection, non-slip shoes.

4. Plan for Timing & Weather

  • Check the Forecast: Aim for a dry day with temperatures above 50°F and below 85°F.

  • Allow for Dry Time: You’ll need at least 24–48 hours of dry weather before re-staining or sealing.

5. Execute the Wash

  1. Pre-Soak: Lightly rinse the deck to loosen surface dirt.

  2. Apply Cleaner: Work in 4–6-foot sections, following product directions and letting solution dwell as recommended.

  3. Agitate Stains: Use your brush to scrub stubborn spots, moving with the wood grain.

  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Wash away all soap residue—leftover cleaner can interfere with sealers.

6. Post-Cleaning Care

  • Inspect for Missed Spots: Touch up any lingering stains or mildew.

  • Allow Full Drying: Wait until boards feel completely dry before walking or replacing items.

  • Consider Sealing or Staining: Lock in protection and color once the deck is bone-dry.
